Frequently asked questions about Visa medical Health checks and tests

Why do you need a Visa Medical?

Many countries receiving immigrants either for work or to be with family, want to ensure that the people coming to live in their country are healthy and not going to bring with them any unwanted diseases that could affect an otherwise healthy population.

A good example of this is Tuberculosis (TB). Some countries want to see a chest X-ray report or a blood test to prove that that you do not have TB and a full vaccination history.

Sometimes the medical is required because of the type of work you are planning to carry-out and to ensure that your are fit for the job.

Each country has their own list of health checks from blood tests for sexually transmitted diseases to vaccinations and chest X-rays to ECG’s to ensure your heart is working well.

The country you are planning to visit will have a visa medical form that needs completed.

WHICH Countries Require A Visa Medical?

Most countries outside of the Uk and Europe will require a medical if you are applying for a work or residential travel visa. Your employer within the country you are travelling to will guide you on this requirement.

What Happens During The Visa Medical?

Each country has their own requirements for the visa process, therefore each medical will be different.

You will need a physical examination and some form of blood tests.

You will usually also be required to undergo some form of sexual health testing for conditions such as HIV, hepatitis and syphilis.

Other screening test may include an ECG which can help show that your heart is healthy or if there is any underlying heart condition.

You may be asked to complete a questionnaire, either by yourself or with the doctor. This will ask you about you and your family's medical history or current medical conditions.

We will then ask you to provide a blood and/or urine sample, which will be sent to the labs for testing.

If you need additional screening tests such as a chest X-ray we will refer you to a local private hospital; this usually takes 1-2 days for an appointment and 5- 7 days to receive a report.

Once we have the results of your blood tests and screening test, we will complete the medical form and send this to you.

Finally, to enter the country requesting the medical, you may be required to have had certain vaccinations. If you have not had these vaccines, we can usually provide these to you during the appointment.

Some countries will require that you are able to prove either that you have had the vaccine by showing your level of immunity in a blood test. We can also provide this service.

How Long Before Travelling Should I Have A Visa Medical?

You should begin the process as soon as is possible.

Usually the blood results are back in 1-2 days; However, some tests like the TB quantiferon Gold test can take longer to come back to us and they then need to be reported on.

If you do require vaccinations, these may be as part of a vaccine programme that requires three to four vaccines and so can take a number of months to complete before we can be sure you are fully immune.
