EAR SUCTIONING

Microsuction is considered to be safer and more effective compared to ear syringing, as it avoids touching the sensitive skin of the ear canal and will have no contact with the eardrum. This means that the risk of infection is reduced, as is the small risk of eardrum perforation with ear syringing or ear irrigation.

Dr Siobhan Graham and Health Care Assistant Tina Fegan have been trained in the Tympa microsuctioning system.

This treatment is suitable for anyone 16 years of age and over

  • We offer a 45 minute appointment

  • You MUST use Olive Oil ear drops or Earol Spray in both ears for 7 days before your procedure. The olive oil softens the wax so that we can remove it easily.

  • If the ear wax is still too hard we advise using olive oil ear spray or drops and that you return after 7 days to have the remaining ear wax removed. There is a follow-up appointment fee of £45.

  • In some cases we may use both irrigation and suctioning depending on the nature of the ear wax, and shape of your ear canal.

  • In some cases there will be fluid behind the ear drum causing your hearing loss / feeling of fullness. We can demonstrate this on our photos or video taken and recommend treatment and prevention.

  • If no ear wax is present, there remains a £35 fee for the appointment. We will provide advice on what could be causing your ear pain or hearing loss.

Ear syringing

We use syringing with warm water which helps push out the deep ear wax. The practitioner will examine your ear before and during the procedure. They will check to ensure that wax is the problem causing the blockage, pain or hearing loss before commencing the ear syringing/irrigation. They will recommend any follow up treatment if you have an underlying ear infection or ear dermatitis.

  • You must soften the ear wax before your appointment by putting some Olive oil in each ear at night for at least 7 days. More information below.

  • Sometimes you will need to come back for a repeat syringing of the ear wax if it densely blocked with wax. There is an additional £45 charge for this.

Price £60*

*If no ear wax is present, there remains a £35 fee for the appointment. We will provide advice on what could be causing your ear pain or hearing loss.

Please note: If you have an infection in your ear we can offer review of your ear examination with our GP and provide a prescription for treatment where needed. The cost of this is an additional £25. If you prefer, you can attend your local NHS GP for this prescription.

Frequently Asked Questions about ear wax

What do I need to do to prepare for my private ear wax removal procedure?

You will need to soften the ear wax before your appointment by putting some Olive oil in each ear at night for at least 7 days. This softens the ear wax so that it will glide out easily and not cause an abrasion to the ear canal. If the wax if hard and dry it is very difficult to remove and can be painful.

How do I put in olive oil into my ear?

While lying down on your side take some extra virgin olive oil in syringe or teaspoon and gently put a few drops into the outer ear canal. Then plug this with some cotton wool before going to sleep. In the morning remove the cotton wool. Sometimes this is enough to make the wax swell and then discharge out of the ear canal and even avoid needing your ears syringed!

How long does private ear wax removal procedure take?

We offer a 45 minute private ear wax removal appointment with Tina Fegan which includes pre procedure consultation and post procedure after care advice.

I have an ear infection. Can I still get private ear wax removal?

We generally use suctioning to remove any of the debris from an ear infection to help clear the infection. Our doctor will also review your ear and can provide a prescription to treat the infection- there is an additional charge of £25 for this or you attend you GP with our notes.

If you have wax and an infection then you can come back if there is still ear wax remaining after that time.

How do I prevent ear wax returning?

If you wear headphones that plug into your ear this can cause a build up of wax, so we recommend wearing a large headphone instead of ear plugs. If you need to wear hearing aids then it maybe that you will require regular ear wax removal, but if you try and use olive oil each night this may help the wax move out of the ear while you sleep. Taking a sauna or a hot bath can help melt the wax and so it will prevent the build-up of hard wax.

Our care is very thorough: we examine your ear before and during the procedure and recommend any ear drops needed after if you have an underlying ear infection or ear dermatitis. We use up-to-the-minute technology with our private procedure. We provide after care advice.

How much does it cost to get ears syringed or ear wax removed near me?

Vitalis health offers private EAR WAX REMOVAL in the form of private ear syringing and private ear micro suctioning using the Tympa technique in Belfast City Centre. We have a special offer of £60 for BOTH ears.

Why do have ear wax build up?

For some people it is due to the shape of their ear canal, whereby it is narrow or has a bend, and so the wax cannot migrate outwards from the ear canal.

Wax is only produced in the outer 1/3 of the ear canal. The outer 1/3 of the ear canal has little hairs that carry the wax outwards.

If you use Q-tips or ear buds to clean your ear, there is a chance you push the was deeper into the middle 1/3 or inner 1/3 of the canal. Once the wax is there it cannot migrate outwards and so stays there and builds up with time.
