what’s the difference between Large and small skin tags ?

We can remove small and large skin tags from the body. Both procedures are performed in the clinic under local anaesthetic.

The doctor will assess your skin tags first at a pre-op appointment to ensure that they are suitable for removal.

If they are tiny skin tags no cutting of the skin is generally required, but if large they are removed by cutting them out like removing a mole.

Skin tags are often found in areas where two surfaces of skin rub together, such as the upper upper thighs and armpits.

Sometimes the small skin tags are genetic and other people in your family will have them; they can also be associated with diabetes.

Larger skin tags tend to occur as one large lesion that has been there for years. These need to be cut out and the skin stitched afterwards.

Please note: we do not remove large anal skin tags

For all private surgical procedures we need to see you for a GP appointment to ensure we can perform the procedure.  This initial assessment costs £125. The procedures range from £250 to £350.

Who does the surgical procedure of private mole removal or private cyst removal?

Dr Siobhan Graham and Dr Rory McKeown administer the surgical procedures in Vitalis Health including private mole, cyst and skin tag removal.

Will a private skin tag removal be painful?

The doctor will freeze the skin so that it is not painful, but the anaesthetic can sting and is a little bit sore. After removal of a larger skin tag the open skin is closed using stitches which will be removed after 7-10 days. Patients may experience tenderness and mild pain after an excision however this is easily managed with at-home pain medication.

What is the process of skin tag removal?

Skin tags can be removed in three ways:

Excision Removal– this is a painless surgical removal under local anaesthetic. The skin lump or skin tag is carefully cut away using a scalpel and completely removed, leaving only a small white or pink scar in its place.

Cryotherapy– locally applied freezing therapy that employs liquid nitrogen gas to freeze the target area. The cold temperature kills the cells within the skin tag, blocking the blood supply to the area and causing it to naturally fall off. Ongoing treatment may be required if the skin tag doesn’t fall off; frequently used or wart and verruca removal.

Electrocautery - This is a routine surgical procedure using a hyfrecator machine. The doctor uses electricity to heat a probe in order to remove unwanted or harmful tissue. The electric current doesn’t enter your body during surgery. Only the heated tip of the probe comes into contact with tissue. The heat seals or removes the tissue it touches. The heat from the probe should sterilize the site. Typically, there’s no need for stitches.
