skin cysts removed at our Belfast clinic
Skin cyst removal
what types of cysts are removed?
We remove two main types of cysts: Sebaceous cysts which can be found anywhere on the body and pilar cysts commonly located on the scalp. We do not remove sebaceous cysts found in the groin and armpit areas.
The cyst removal operation is performed in the clinic and cysts are not sent off for laboratory analysis unless suspicious of being cancerous
Pilar cysts on the scalp can be quite large and often there is more than one pilar present. Depending on the size and the number of pilar cysts we may need a longer appointment.
The doctor will assess your cyst first to ensure that it is suitable for removal. This is done as a pre-op assessment.
If the cyst can be removed and is not thought to be a cancerous growth, then the procedure will be explained to you so that you understand how it will be done and have a chance to ask any questions.
PLEASE NOTE: cysts > 2cm diameter incur an additional cost of £95 for the xtra time required.
SKin cyst removal- how is this performed?
All procedures are performed in our clinical room by Dr Graham or Dr McKeown, who is assisted by our health care assistant, Tina.
We will put you ease and play relaxing music during the procedure.
The skin is cleaned with iodine and then frozen with some anaesthetic liquid. Once frozen a small cut is made along the top of the cyst and then it is gently and slowly removed from the attached skin and tissue.
The cyst removal can take 20-40 minutes depending on the size of the cyst and whether there is any scar tissue, or bleeding.
The open skin is then closed using stitches which will be removed by our doctor after 7-14 days at your post-op assessment.
