| Services | Cyst Removal
Cyst removal in less than 1 hour at our Belfast city centre clinic. Includes sebaceous cysts on the body, jaw line and pilar cysts on the head.

Cyst removal at Vitalis Health is a straightforward, in-clinic procedure carried out by Dr McKeown, assisted by our Healthcare Assistant Tina.
Before any procedure, the doctor will need to assess your cyst in-person to ensure that it is suitable for removal. This is done as a pre-op assessment.
If the cyst can be removed and is not thought to be a cancerous growth, then the procedure will be explained to you so that you understand how it will be done and have a chance to ask any questions.
The initial consultation is non-refundable.
We remove two main types of cysts:
Sebaceous cysts can be found anywhere on the body and pilar cysts are commonly located on the scalp. We do not remove sebaceous cysts found in the groin and armpit areas or on the hands.
The cyst removal operation is performed in the clinic and cysts are not sent off for laboratory analysis unless suspicious of being cancerous.
Pilar cysts on the scalp can be quite large and often there is more than one pilar present. Depending on the size and the number of pilar cysts we may need a longer appointment.
The cost includes a post procedure review.
The skin is cleaned with iodine and then frozen with some anaesthetic liquid. Once frozen a small cut is made along the top of the cyst and then it is gently and slowly removed from the attached skin and tissue.
The cyst removal can take 20-40 minutes depending on the size of the cyst and whether there is any scar tissue, or bleeding.
The open skin is then closed using stitches which will be removed by our doctor after 7-14 days at your post-op assessment.

For all private surgical procedures we need to see you for a GP appointment to ensure we can perform the procedure. This initial assessment costs £140 and the procedure starts from £530.
Dr Rory McKeown administers the surgical procedures in Vitalis Health including private mole, cyst and skin tag removal. Dr McKeown brings over 20 years of medical experience to the practice in Belfast City Centre and is highly experienced in surgical procedures such as mole and cyst removal.
The doctor will freeze the skin so that it is not painful during a private mole removal or private cyst removal procedure. After a cyst removal, the open skin is closed using stitches which will be removed after 7-10 days.
Patients may experience tenderness and mild pain after an excision however this is easily managed with at-home pain medication.
Cyst removal is a straightforward surgical procedure and usually takes between 20 to 45 minutes depending on the size of the cyst.
Unlike moles, it is usually clear through examination that a cyst is not cancerous. If we suspect that your cyst is something unusual we will refer you to urgently to see a dermatologist. The cyst will not be removed in our clinic in these cases. This is rare.
Vitalis Health aims to offer next day appointments, so if you are concerned about any mole or cyst you can book an appointment to be seen by Dr McKeown.
